Inspired by the stories of Sholom Aleichem,
it brings to life
the story of Tevye, his wife Golde and his five daughters who are
yearning for something new even as great changes are happening in the
world outside their small Jewish village of Anatevka,
Russia. Tevye attempts to maintain his family and religious traditions
while outside influences encroach upon his life. He must cope with
both the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters—each
daughter's choice of husband moves progressively further away from
established customs—and with the edict of the Tsar that will evict the
Jews from their homeland village. The score includes such familiar
songs as "If I Were a Rich Man," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," "Sunrise,
Sunset" and "To Life."
